The restaurant screen that changes with the day
A restaurant screen can respond to breakfast, lunch, rain, inventory, and service speed without becoming chaotic. Here is a practical way to run it.
At 7:15 a.m., the screen above the counter sells an $8 breakfast bowl. At lunch, it switches to a green goddess bowl that is ready now. When rain hits later, it offers tomato soup and toast for $11.
That sounds simple because the finished ads are simple. Behind them is a chain of small decisions about menu availability, time, weather, service speed, creative rules, and what should happen when any one of those inputs goes missing.
This is part seven of our DOOH series. In creative operations for thousands of screens, we covered the production discipline needed at scale. To make that operating model concrete, we created Juniper & Grain, a fictional fast-casual restaurant whose screen changes with the day.
Breakfast has a clear price, a short preparation estimate, and a product that makes sense at 7:15 a.m.
Dayparting is the useful starting point
Restaurants already understand dayparts. Breakfast, lunch, afternoon, dinner, and late night have different menus and different customer needs. Putting those windows into a screen schedule is the easiest version of responsive creative.

The common idea is solid. Use a known signal to select or update a creative. But time alone cannot tell you whether the kitchen can make what the ad promises.
That is why a useful restaurant setup begins with dayparting and then adds operating truth.
Give the screen a compact set of operating facts
For this use case, a compact set of operating inputs is enough to make a relevant ad:
- Local time and the restaurant's actual service windows
- Item availability from the menu or point-of-sale system
- A last-updated time for every inventory signal
- Current weather from an approved provider
- Preparation time or kitchen load, if that estimate is reliable
- The screen's location, dimensions, and placement rules
- Campaign budget, play targets, and creative priority
Assigning an owner to each input prevents overlap. The point-of-sale system may be authoritative for whether the soup is sellable. A manager may control a manual stop switch. A weather feed can report rain without having permission to rewrite the price.
Freshness matters too. An inventory value from two minutes ago and one from yesterday should not both be treated as “in stock.” The decision system needs a maximum age for each signal. Once a value is stale, it becomes unknown.
Unknown is not the same as yes.
That one rule prevents a surprisingly common failure: advertising an item because an unreliable feed did not explicitly say it was unavailable.
Three moments, one restaurant
The first Juniper & Grain creative is the morning board shown above. It contains only four pieces of copy: the restaurant name, “Morning Bowl,” “$8,” and “Ready in 4 min.” The bowl and coffee do most of the visual work.
At 12:20 p.m., the setting stays put while the offer changes.
The lunch version keeps the room, camera, people, screen, and brand palette consistent while changing the meal and message.
“Ready now” is more than a nice line. It should only appear when the operating signal supports it. If the kitchen estimate cannot be trusted, use a line that does not make a service promise.
The lunch decision could be written in plain English:
- The location is serving lunch.
- The green goddess bowl is available.
- The availability signal is fresh.
- The current wait is below the approved threshold.
- The lunch campaign still needs plays at this screen.
If those conditions are true, the lunch version is eligible. The engine can still choose among approved messages, layouts, or images, but it cannot invent a price, claim an unavailable ingredient, or ignore the campaign's delivery plan.

Weather should change the reason, not just the background
The third version reacts to rain. The view through the windows becomes gray and wet. The board moves from forest green to a deep food-friendly red and promotes soup with toast.
A weather trigger works best with a threshold and a geography. “Rain somewhere in the city” may not be useful for a neighborhood restaurant. Rain observed near this location within the last few minutes may be. A minimum run time can keep a passing shower from making the menu board flip back and forth every minute.
A two-degree temperature change is rarely a new creative idea. Teams can use bands such as cold, mild, and hot, then add a delay before moving between them. Marketers can tune those bands over time without making the screen feel nervous.
This is also a good place to separate an owned menu board from paid DOOH inventory. On a screen the restaurant controls, a local system may be able to update content quickly. A screen bought through a third party may have a different approval and delivery path. In other words, confirm the whole path, including the media owner and player, before planning a five-minute weather response.
Pacing has two jobs
When marketers hear pacing, they usually think about spending the campaign budget evenly. That is one job. The other is pacing the creative experience.
Budget pacing asks whether an offer has received enough eligible plays for the day. If the breakfast creative is behind plan at 9:30 a.m., the system might increase its priority before breakfast ends. It should not keep serving breakfast into lunch just to spend the budget.
Experience pacing asks how often the board should change. A restaurant screen that switches every few seconds can be harder to read and can make prices feel unreliable. Set a minimum hold time, respect the venue's loop, and keep key menu information stable long enough for a person in line to use it.
The two controls need a clear order. Menu truth and safety come first. Then the valid daypart and contextual rules. Campaign pacing chooses only among the creatives left after those checks.
Consistency came from one master scene
We generated these three 1536 by 1024 JPEGs from one shared master image. Each selected version used that same restaurant as its source. The edit instructions locked the camera position, architecture, people, counter, screen frame, colors, and photographic style. They asked for changes only to the screen content and the light or weather needed for that moment.
That is why the woman at the register, the customer with the brown bag, the kitchen, plants, windows, and wood ceiling remain in place. We did not regenerate a new restaurant for breakfast, then use breakfast to create lunch, then use lunch to create rain. A chain like that would let small visual changes pile up.
The same method works for real brands. Start with approved anchors such as the location, product pack, logo, palette, type rules, and screen safe area. Generate variations from those anchors. Then validate the final files rather than assuming a good prompt will preserve every detail.
For prices and availability, visual consistency is not enough. The text on the image must be checked against the source data before delivery. If the menu says $11 and the screen says $10, the creative is wrong even if it looks beautiful.
Build the fallback before the clever version
Every trigger needs an “otherwise.” A practical restaurant hierarchy might look like this:
- Serve the context-aware creative when all required signals are current and the item is available.
- Serve the normal daypart creative when weather or service-speed data is missing.
- Serve an approved evergreen brand or category creative when menu availability is unknown.
- Keep the last known safe file on the player if generation, validation, download, or playback fails.
- Let staff stop a creative immediately when the kitchen or register cannot honor it.
A strong fallback is a real, pre-approved asset stored close to the player. It uses a different path from the network call or generation service that just failed and avoids price or availability claims that can expire.
This may feel less exciting than a rain trigger. It is the part that lets a team use rain triggers on a busy Friday without watching the screen all afternoon.
Start with one decision worth automating
A useful first restaurant project is often one choice that staff already make and customers already understand, not a different ad for every possible condition.
Breakfast to lunch is a good start. So is hot versus cold weather, an in-stock item versus an evergreen category message, or normal service versus a long wait. Define the source of truth, create the eligible variations, set freshness limits, and agree on the fallback. Then compare sales, item mix, or another business outcome during matched periods.
Once that loop works, add another signal.
